Tax treatment of LTC
Understand what the tax exemption relates to.
Section 10(5) — eligible travel fare
Eligible LTC travel reimbursement can receive tax exemption under Section 10(5), subject to the conditions applicable to the claim. The exemption is connected with qualifying travel fare rather than every expense incurred during the trip.
Keep the journey documents and claim records safely, and ensure that the reimbursement does not exceed the amount admissible under the applicable LTC entitlement.
Keep your claim file organised
Before submitting your LTC claim, keep tickets, boarding passes, leave approval and family-related documents together. A simple document checklist can prevent delays caused by missing records.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions about using this LTC tool.
This calculator is designed to help Central Government employees understand LTC planning in a simple way. You can select your journey type, Pay Level, travel mode, number of travellers and approximate fare details to generate an indicative estimate.
The result is intended for planning and understanding. It should not be treated as an official reimbursement sanction.
Start by selecting the Pay Level applicable to you. Then choose the relevant block, journey option and travel mode.
Enter the number of travellers, approximate one-way distance and actual one-way fare if available. Finally, select Calculate LTC to view the estimate.
Home Town LTC is connected with the employee’s declared Home Town, while the All India option allows eligible travel to a destination within India subject to the applicable LTC provisions.
Select the option that matches the journey you are planning. Eligibility and the number of journeys available can depend on your service circumstances and applicable rules.
Select the Pay Level applicable to your post under the 7th CPC pay structure.
The calculator uses the selected level as part of its indicative travel-entitlement estimation. If you are unsure of your Pay Level, check your latest salary slip or service records.
Enter the approximate distance from your starting point to the destination in one direction, in kilometres.
For example, if your approximate one-way journey is 1,200 km, enter 1200. The tool uses this value as part of its indicative calculation.
Enter the approximate fare paid for one person for the one-way journey.
If you do not yet know the actual ticket fare, you can leave the field blank and use the distance-based estimate for preliminary planning.
LTC may cover eligible family members in addition to the employee, subject to the applicable conditions.
Enter the number of people whose eligible travel you want to include in the estimate. The actual admissible family members should be verified against the applicable LTC rules.
This field helps you indicate how many LTC journeys you have already used during the applicable block.
It is a planning input only. The calculator does not replace verification of your LTC record by your office or administration.
No. The result is an indicative estimate.
The actual reimbursement can depend on your entitlement, the fare actually paid, admissible travel class, eligible family members, tickets, applicable Government orders and verification by the competent authority.
Yes, the calculator provides an air-travel option for planning. However, selecting “Air” does not automatically mean that the complete airfare is reimbursable.
Air entitlement, permitted class, booking conditions and other restrictions should be checked against the current Government rules applicable to the employee.
Keep your travel tickets, boarding passes where applicable, leave sanction details, LTC claim form and relevant family documents together.
Your department may require additional documents depending on the nature of the claim.
The LTC calculation is primarily concerned with admissible travel fare. Hotel accommodation, food, sightseeing and other personal holiday expenses should not be assumed to be covered merely because they were incurred during an LTC journey.
Eligible Leave Travel Concession or Assistance is recognised under Section 10(5) of the Income-tax Act, subject to the applicable conditions.
Tax treatment can depend on the tax regime and the applicable provisions for the relevant assessment year. Always verify the current position before filing your return.
This can happen because the tool is designed for estimation. Actual reimbursement can be affected by admissible travel class, fare restrictions, booking conditions, family eligibility, journey dates and departmental verification.
